Jivanmuktanandalahari

**Jivanmuktanandalahari** (The Wave of Bliss of the Liberated in Life) is a profound and poetic hymn of Advaita Vedanta attributed to the great philosopher-saint **Adi Shankaracharya**. The title itself is composed of three Sanskrit words: * **Jivanmukta (जीवन्मुक्त):** One who is liberated while still living in the physical body. * **Ananda (आनन्द):** Pure, unalloyed, and infinite bliss. * **Lahari (लहरी):** A wave.

Thus, the title beautifully translates to “The Wave of Bliss of the Liberated While Living.”

Core Theme and Philosophy

In Advaita Vedanta, the ultimate goal of human existence is Moksha (liberation). Unlike some traditions where liberation is viewed as an afterlife achievement (Videhamukti), Advaita posits that liberation is a realization of one’s true nature as Brahman (the absolute, non-dual reality) right here and now. A person who awakens to this ultimate truth while still inhabiting their physical body is called a Jivanmukta.

Jivanmuktanandalahari serves as a vivid, ecstatic description of the inner state of such an enlightened sage. While the sage may outwardly appear to act like an ordinary human being—eating, walking, or engaging with the world—their internal reality is fundamentally transformed. The Jivanmukta operates from a state of complete detachment and non-duality. They see no distinction between themselves and the cosmos; they are completely free from the psychological suffering caused by dualities such as joy and sorrow, honor and dishonor, success and failure.
